Perfectas

Q: Hey, IG, I got two questions for you. 1: Are perfectas the same as exactas?       2: So how do you make sense out of this chart?

A: 1: Yes. 2: Green is good, black is bad. Unless you look at the odds and see that 6-3 is being hammered at 8 to 1, but 3-6 is 999 to 1. In that case, you'd be better off in the long run betting the 3-6, as long as they're aren't several other people just like you doing the same thing. It can get kind of complicated, but that's an entirely different problem. This table shows the approximate frequency each combination will come in every 10,000 games. For you numbers obsessed folks, the numbers don't add up exactly as they've all been rounded off. The difference between 194 and 193.87429283888374 isn't worth getting excited about.

1-2      327 1-3      280 1-4      226 1-5      228 1-6      194 1-7      199 1-8      177
2-1      327 2-3      280 2-4      226 2-5      228 2-6      194 2-7      199 2-8      177
3-1      337 3-2      337 3-4      154 3-5      126 3-6      110 3-7      155 3-8      168
4-1      331 4-2      331 4-3      226 4-5        88 4-6        58 4-7      102 4-8      103
5-1      244 5-2      244 5-3      234 5-4      132 5-6        49 5-7        62 5-8        56
6-1      212 6-2      212 6-3      241 6-4      188 6-5        85 6-7        55 6-8        33
7-1      150 7-2      150 7-3      182 7-4      187 7-5      131 7-6        54 7-8        35
8-1      173 8-2      173 8-3      207 8-4      229 8-5      205 8-6      133 8-7        57

Q: Another table?

A: Yes, and this one's a lot more helpful. Instead of frequency, it shows the actual odds of each combination coming in. For example, if the 4-3 comes in about 226 times in every 10,000 games, the odds against it are about 43 to 1. If you compare these numbers to what you'll see on the odds monitor at the fronton shortly before the start of the game, you'll know which numbers provide value, or no value, in betting. This of course assumes all the players in the game are of equal talent, so one needs to make adjustments according to the skill levels of each player.

Q: But that's a lot of work!

A: If you want to win money without working, buy a lottery ticket. Otherwise, do a little studying.
