Q: Hey, Mr. Insane Gambler, what do all these numbers mean?

A: Well, I'll tell you, my fine feathered friend. These are what you call in-depth jai-alai stats. The first chart shows the results of several computer simulations that have been done. Hundreds of thousands of seven-point games were "played" with each post, 1 to 8, having an equal chance of winning each point. This chart represents what would most likely happen every 10,000 games.

There are a total of 336 possible trifecta combinations, so an "average" number would come in just under 30 times. BUT, under the SSSS, in which points double after the first round of play, certain numbers will come in much more often than others. Some numbers, like 6-8-7 are nearly impossible. Those numbers have a ** instead of a number to indicate they'll come in less than once every 10,000 games. NAGB!

But wait, there's another fly in the ointment - all players are not equal in talent. (Wow, that's a revelation) So if trifectas are your bag and you're looking to make some big scores, you need to combine these probabilities with player handicapping. If you don't do both my friend, YAMDD. D-O-O-M-E-D

Q: So what about these colors? Rather distracting, don't you think?

A: Yes, indeed they are. This has to be the worst chart on this site. Our table wizard kept working and working and working and just couldn't seem to come up with the right color combinations. The poor boy tried but just couldn't get the job done.

Anyway, the numbers are divided into four groups of 84 trifecta numbers each. The red ones are the top 25% in frequency, blue the second 25%, green is third, and black is fourth. Most bettors are well aware of these frequencies, so the payoffs will almost always be low for the best numbers. Depending upon which fronton you're playing and how much money is in the trifecta pool, one might very well make more money playing some of the less than frequent numbers. The big problem is in overcoming the 25 percent mutuel takeout. Only 75 percent of the money bet gets returned to the winning bettors. Those are tough, tough odds to overcome.

Here's another table that shows the frequencies from another angle. In this case, the red numbers account for about 25 percent of all the trifectas that come in. That's different from the one above. Let's explain it so even a third-grader can understand it. The red numbers above, 84 of them that would cost $168 per game, come in about 51 percent of the time. It's basically an even-money bet, but you'll have to average more than $320 per payoff. In the table below, there are only 36 red numbers. That's $72 per game with a win average of 25.6 percent. That means you'll need an average payoff of $281 to break even. That's still tough to do with that darn takeout of 25 percent.

Damn that takeout. There are so many other games to play where your edge is so much better, why bother with jai-alai, horses, or dogs? TIG is a great supporter of lowering the takeout shares of the state in order to increase the handle. Gamblers will eventually lose their money, but they're more likely to do it if given a fighting chance with better odds. Okay, TIG will get off his soapbox.

Back to the subject...The blue group accounts for another 25 percent, the green, and then the black. Blue has 46 numbers, green has 66 and black has the remaining 188 combinations. Yes, 188! The 36 best numbers win 25 percent of the time, and you need 188 of the bad ones to match that. The black ones would cost $376 per game and win 25 percent of the time. You'd need an average payoff of just over $1,500 per win! Guess what? TAGH!

Needless to say, (but we'll say it anyway) those infrequent numbers are bad bets almost all the time. The bottom line is that it's really hard to make money just playing the numbers. You need to do some handicapping, pal! And all the info you need to do that is here at the handicapping page.
